Brief Description: Youth Companion Magazine was founded in 1827 in Boston by Perry Mason & Co. In 1929 it merged with The Companion. Early issues centered around religion and young readers bu later catered to adults. Among the writers who contributed to the magazine were Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, Booker T. Washington and Jack London. Later contributions were by Willa Cather and Winston Churchill. The trading cards were sent to magazine subscribers. On September, 1892 the magazine published the first copy of the pledge of allegiance written by staff member Francis Bellamy.
