Physical Description: Map illustrates lands claimed by the Republic of Indian Stream, an unrecognized constitutional republic in North America along the U.S.-Canada border. It was the result of the ambiguous boundary between the United States and Canada as defined in the Treaty of Paris 1783. Double taxation and the arrest of a New Hampshire citizen for an unpaid debt resulted in a diplomatic crisis. In January 1836, Britain relinquished its claim and American jurisdiction was acknowledged in May, 1836. The dispute was settled in 1842 by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty and the land was assigned to New Hampshire.
