Brief Description: Map illustrates the conflict between Nigeria and the breakaway state of Biafra in 1967. The war created a famine due to the blockade imposed by the Nigerian federal forces shown here in a photograph of fleeing refugees walking the streets of Lagos. Also featured are images of the two principle leaders of the conflict: Major General Yakubu Gowon head of Nigeria's military regime who defeated the Biafran leader of the lost cause, General Odumegwu Ojukwu who fled to the Ivory Coast seeking asylum. Text side panel is the address given by Yakubu Gowon calling for unity. Included on the map are images of Nigeria's cottage industries such as leather work and exports which include lumber, peanuts, cocoa and the mining of columbite which is used to make heat-resistant steel for jet engines.
