Brief Description: Thomas D. Parkinson (1835-1906) was an American civil engineer and businessman who worked in Nevada and San Francisco at various times in his life. In 1880 he was appointed Humboldt County, California Surveyor. Later he was manager of the Nevada Land and Cattle Company in 1888 but resigned two years later accused of mismanagement and then returned to the Bay Area. Grafton Tyler Brown (1841-1918) was an African-American painter, lithographer, viewmaker and cartographer active in California and the Pacific Northwest. Born in Pennsylvania, he was the son of a freedman who was involved in the abolitionist movement. He studied printing in Philadelphia at 14 and mastered lithography in later years. After working with the National Geological Survey and moving several times he settled in Saint Paul, Minnesota working for the United States Army Corps of Engineers as well as a draughtsman for the city. He remained there until his death in 1918. The map was compiled by Parkinson and Brown highlighting and outlining in several colors the individual mining claims of the Comstock Lode. This was the largest silver discovery named after the miner Henry Comstock who discovered the mine in 1857. Inset is the longitudinal section of the Comstock Lode.
