"Cum casaris et reg catholici privileg" refers to the privilege granted by the Catholic king who at this time was King Philip IV of Spain.

Brief Description: The depiction of the Netherlands as a lion was introduced by Michael von Aitzing in 1579 and was used by other European cartographers to symbolize strength. This 1648 version by Famiano Strada, a pro-Spanish Jesuit used the lion in a two volume history on the Netheralnds war for independence. Copper engraved in Antwerp, the lion symbolizes the Dutch Republic's strength of character, its teeth bared and raised right foreleg. The tale encircles the compass rose reflecting pride in Dutch navigational power. This version is the frontispiece for Strada's publication. Includes flecks of gold on the lion's teeth and claws and on the compass rose.
