Brief Description: Detailed panoramic view depicting the first Union naval blockade of the Southern Confederate coast. The view includes the battle of Hatteras Inlet Batteries, the first combined Union and Navy operation in the American Civil War. Fought from August 28 to the 29th in 1861 it resulted in the Union dominating the strategically important North Carolina sounds. The view also illustrates the presence of the ironclads USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia (originally CSS Merrimac) at Hampton Roads, Virginia. They did engage in a three hour battle which ended in a stand-off. This was the first battle featuring ironclads fought March 8th through the 9th, 1862.
