This is the Atomic Bomb issue from the World War II Newsmap series depicting the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki one week before the Japanese announced their surrender. Included are photographs of a fleet and the specially constructed docks for the vessels. The map shows the advances of the Soviets, the Chinese and the American navy approaching Japan's dwindling empire. On the upper right corner is depicted the mushroom cloud created by the atomic bomb.

Historical Context: World War II map created by the Army Information Branch and published on August 20, 1945. The two atomic bombs ended the Pacific War and Japan officially surrendered on September 2, 1945 aboard the USS Missouri. This was considered officially V-J Day but it was on August 14, 1945 when the world learned of Japan's surrender.
