Brief Description: Shows land plots, ownership of land along Kennebec and Cobbossecontee rivers, manuscript map on rollers, 19th century. Gardiner was founded as Gardinerstown Plantation in 1754 by Dr. Silvester Gardiner a Boston physician. Successful as a drug merchant, he also became a principal proprietor of the Kennebec Purchase. When the Revolutionary War broke out, Dr. Gardiner who was a Loyalist, fled Boston when the British evacuated. His settlement continued without him and in 1803 Gardiner was incorporated as a town. Map includes streets, land lots with ownership along the Kennebec and Cobbossecontee Rivers.
