Brief Description: Includes four inset maps and eight ancillary maps showing explorer routes from 1800 to 1900. Includes illustrations of explorers such as Henry Stanley, David Livingstone and Mungo Park.  Johan Georg Justus Perthes was an important German cartographic engraver of the 19th century. He established a publishing firm with the 1784 issue of the Almanac de Gotha, a survey of European nobility. The firm passed into four generations and continued in the family until 1953 when East Germany nationalized it and ran it as a state-owned enterprise. Paul Langhans was a cartographer and geographer and started working for Justus Perthes in 1889 creating maps and atlases for the company. He published a magazine supporting folk and cultural soil research.
