Brief Description: A map of Tripp County, South Dakota produced in 1908 anticipating the land lottery which distributed Sioux lands on the Rosebud Reservation to white homesteaders. The Dawes Act of 1887 precipitated the subdivision of millions of acres of communally-owned tribal lands across the country that were turned into farmland. The act was to encourage the Native American assimilation into the Euro-American model of ranching and farming. The land turned out to be substandard. The map features townships, sections and quarter-sections imposed by surveyors in grid patterns. Parcels of lands are identified by the names of the Sioux owners. Also included is a line of the Chicago and Northwestern Railway which would expand westward bringing in more settlers.

Historical Context: The Black Hills War of 1876 ushered in the reduction of the Great Sioux Reservation and eventually through a series of treaties it was divided into smaller reservations. The 1887 General Allotment Act or Dawes Act provided for the subdivision of millions of acres of land communally-owned by the tribes. In 1901 the Rosebud Sioux sold unallotted lands to the government which opened up the area to settlement. In 1908 a lottery was established and the drawing was held on October 19, 1908.
