Surrounding the map are various countries' flags, exhibit buildings highlighting technical advances, various mottos in Latin and French such as "Pax", "Industry", "Work" and "Agriculture". The central theme of the fair was the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution which was boycotted by nations with monarchies including the United Kingdom.
