It was named after John Brewer who sailed from Massachusetts along the coast of Maine to the Penobscot River and the present site of Brewer. He built a dam and sawmill at the mouth of the Segeunkedunk Stream. He served during the American Revolutionary War and became captain in the militia. He left for Massachusetts to safeguard his family but returned after the war. In 1812 Brewer split from Orrington of which it had been a part of since 1788 and became a separate town.
