Brief Description: The Phlegraean Fields known as the Campi Flegrei is a large volcanic area situated to the west of Naples, Italy. The view depicts the Neapolitan coastline where deadly sulphurous vapors rise from the ground. An allegorical scene represents the mythical forge of the god Vulcan and includes figures with a donkey's head and a Medusa's head striking an anvil with smiths' hammers. The cartouche is framed by horseshoes a reference to the forge. In the center of the view is Juris Hoefnagel the artist and scholar Abraham Ortelius discussing the scene. Also included are a woman with a servant carrying her train behind her and a man carried in a sedan chair. Since antiquity travelers were fascinated by the hot springs and craters portrayed here by Georg Hoefnagel.
