Brief Description: Point Lookout began with the construction of a lighthouse in 1830. In 1859 it was the site of a seaside resort. During the war the hotel (#22 on the view) and bungalows housed officers. In 1862 the U.S. government rented the land from the resort owner and on August 17, 1862 the Hammond General Hospital received its first patients. The Confederate prisoners were confined on the hospital grounds in wards in a circle around central buildings that resembled the spokes of a wheel. Living conditions were notorious as any other Civil War prisoner of war camp. Approximately 4,000 prisoners died at the camp. View includes a key of numbers 1 through 63 corresponding to numbers marked on the image which include the lighthouse, tent encampments, steam ships docked at the wharf and three flying the stars and stripes sailing under way.
