Brief Description: Pictorial map celebrating medical milestones in North America as a promotion for pharmaceutical firm Abbott Laboratories. Illustrated by prolific artist Lucille Corcos, it features famous doctors such as Dr. Walter Reed , Dr. Carlos Finlay and associates who studied mosquitos related to yellow fever. Included is the first use of ether in 1842 by Dr. Crawford Long and Benjamin Franklin who promoted the Pennsylvania Hospital. Although the map is dominated by male figures, Doctor Elizabeth Blackwell, the first American woman to receive a degree in medicine and Marie Zakrzewska who established the first training school for nurses in America are also featured. Also included is a quote from French physiologist Claude Bernard: "The names of the prime movers of science disappear gradually in a general fusion, and the more a science advances, the more impersonal and detached it becomes."

Historical Context: Map shows the progress of medicine and accomplishments in the field by numerous scientists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Abbott Laboratories which used this as a promotion for its pharmaceuticals was founded in 1888 by Dr. Wallace C. Abbott of Chicago. During World War II it led an effort to ramp up production of penicillin. It continues to focus on a variety of general pharmaceuticals.
