Brief Description: Handwritten notations on the map by George A. Hough who sailed on the Vestris in 1924. Hough was a newspaper publisher from New Jersey who traveled widely and made several trips to Argentina. The Vestris was a 1912 steam ocean line operated by Lamport and Holt Line and had service between New York and the River Plate. On November 11, 1928 the vessel left New York and the next day it began listing about 200 miles off of Hampton Roads, Virginia, abandoned and sank killing more than 100 people. There were speculations as to why it sank including that it was overloaded, had outdated life preservers and lacked more modern radio sets. The sinking greatly reduced Lamport & Holt's bookings and in 1929 service to South America was terminated.
