Brief Description: Albumen print from 1863 taken at the battlefield of Gettysburg. The view is looking west toward the town from Seminary Ridge. The town is visible in the background and includes trees, fences and fields. Also on the left side a large building on the left is Pennsylvania Hall which became the central administration building of Gettysburg College. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought from July 1st through the 3rd, 1863 and is considered a defining moment of the American Civil War. Although the Confederate army made some advances in the beginning, the battle reached a stalemate. To break it the decision was made to charge a heavily fortified Union position of Cemetery Ridge which became known as Pickett's Charge. It was named after its leader Major General George Pickett. The charge was a disaster and incurred heavy losses on both sides but led to the Confederates retreating back to Virginia.
