The map depicts the story of the Spanish-American War of 1898 and American expansionism into Cuba, the Philippines, China and Puerto Rico. Included are images of military figures who participated in the war and were part of the efforts to increase the United States's interests in other countries. Included on the map is a portrait of Theodore Roosevelt surrounded by flags. In the center is the Spanish War Memorial building superimposed on a compass rose. Also included is an image of President William McKinley next to a map of Cuba. Above the Roosevelt portrait are vignettes of his life from rancher to becoming president after the assassination of McKinley in 1901.

Historical Context: The United States went to war against Spain in 1898 to help free Cuba from Spanish rule. After this conflict the United States expanded its interests to other Spanish possessions such as the Philippines and Puerto Rico. It also intervened in the Boxer Rebellion in China along with an eight-nation alliance to defeat the rebellion.
