Historical Context: In the early 20th century immigrants sought a better life in the United States to escape poverty and discrimination. Many immigrants came from eastern and southern Europe. The Immigration Act of 1924 and the Asian Exclusion Act, were federal laws preventing immigration from Asia and eastern and southern Europe. In 1927, the 1924 act was modified and the United States began using census data to keep track of immigrants.
