The purpose of the encyclopedie was to gather all available knowledge, analyze it rationally and scientifically.  The 46 individual original plates explore the sciences, arts and crafts.

Historical Context: Denis Diderot was a major figure in the Age of Enlightenment and was a philosopher and writer. He is best known for the encyclopedie which was the first to introduce the mechanical arts. It became controversial because of skeptical views on religion and was banned by the Catholic Church and the French government. There were many contributors and the two most famous were his friend Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Voltaire.
