The Sphere was a weekly publication from January 27, 1900 to when it ceased on June 27, 1964. Founded by Clement Shorter, it covered news stories domestically and globally. During World War I weekly issues were published and called war numbers. This issue's cover reflects the war by illustrating France in the form of a woman wearing a Phrygian or liberty cap fighting an eagle wearing the German imperial crown on top of a warplane.

Historical Context: World War I was a conflict touched off by the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife by a Serbian nationlist on June 28, 1914. Gavrilo Princip, the assassin was part of a nationalist movement to end Austro-Hungarian rule and wanted to increase Serbian power in the Balkans. Austria declared war on Serbia on July 28, 1914 with an alliance with Germany. Because of war alliances formed throughout Europe it became a global conflict. When Germany invaded Belgium in August, 1914, Great Britain declared war on Germany because it violated the Belgian sovereignity.
