Historical Context: World War I was a global conflict that began in 1914 and ended in 1918. On June 28, 1914 Bosnian nationalist Gavrilo Princip assassinated the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife Sophie. It was the catalyst that started the war. Territorial disputes, arm races and Germany's ambitions to grow and empire to compete with France and Great Britain were part of the cause for the war.
