Brief Description: Poster depicts an African-American mother and her three children looking at a portrait of the father flanked by flags and portraits of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Woodrow Wilson. Edward George Renesch was an illustrator in Chicago who operated Renesch Company producing what were called "negro uplift" posters. They were bought by families with sons and fathers serving during World War One.

Historical Context: When the United States entered the war in 1917, more than 300,000 African-Americans enlisted in the military. Most were in non-combative positions in service and supply of the U.S. Expeditionary Forces. Some divisions saw combat but because of Jim Crow laws the U.S. military was segregated.
