Brief Description: Pan Am or Pan American World Airways was founded in 1927 by two U.S. Army Corps majors. Its office was in Key West, Florida flying service to Havana, Cuba. During the 1950's and early 1970's Pan American was known for its advanced fleet, well-trained staff and many amenities which may have included the fedora. The airline led the aircraft industry into the Jet Age by acquiring new jetliners such as the Boeing 707 and Boeing 747. However into the mid 1970's and into the 1980's the airline began experiencing challenges and financial issues. In 1991, it sold off its assets and declared bankruptcy. In 1998, railroad holding company Guilford Transportation Industries purchased the name and logo and changed the name to Pan Am Systems. On June 1, 2022, CSX Transportation acquired Pan Am Systems and began operating Pan Am Railways as its subsidiary. Pan Am System ceased operation.
Featured on the hatbox is a Boeing 377 Stratocruiser. In red letters on the hatbox rim is "The Pan Am Hat by Lee". The hat is a gray fedora very likely from the 1950's.
