Brief Description: The 1878 Exposition Universelle was a world's fair held in Paris, France from May 1 to November 10, 1878 celebrating France's recovery from the 1870-71 Franco-Prussian War. The exposition featured inventions such as Alexander Graham Bell's telephone and Thomas Edison's megaphone and phonograph. Two of the trade cards are from the 1889 exposition held from May 6 to October 31, 1889. The Eiffel Tower was created for this fair. The exposition celebrated the 100th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille which ushered in the French Revolution. It displayed technology and advances in science. Pavilions were devoted to the telephone, electricity and maritime navigation.
Verso: Some of the trade cards have advertising for tonics in Spanish. Included are ads in English for a New England Shoe Agency called St. Ann Store which won a gold medal at the exposition. The eight cards include lithographic images of buildings and pavilions of Russia, Belgium, Algeria, Japan, Tunisia. The Ministry of War and a building for Liberal Arts were also part of the exposition as was the Champs de Mars which was the large space that was used for the expositions and other large events.
