Brief Description: Thematic map by André-Michel Guerry, French lawyer and statistician and Adriano Balbi, itinerant Italian mapmaker and scholar. The maps examine the connections between crime rates and educational levels in France using color or shading to denote relevant values utilizing a type of mapping called choropleth maps. One map records personal crimes, another against property and the third is a compilation of the different educational districts noting areas in dark shading which correspond to higher crime rates. Included is an explanation where the data was drawn from for the years 1825, 1826 and 1827. Their source for the data came from the General Account of the Administration of Criminal Justice. Charts indicate that in each department out of 1000 inhabitants there is one convict.
