Notes: The illustration, of Revolutionary War militia leader Francis Marion, aka The Swamp Fox, and members of his party preparing to share food with a British officer takes after the painting titled General Marion Inviting a British Officer to Share His Meal by John Blake White, painted between 1830 and 1837. According to the Smithsonian, "the image also appeared on Confederate banknotes issued in 1861 by South Carolina." And, "Included in Marion's party are two Black men and three men with plumed hats. Identified by genealogist Tina Jones, his distant relative, Oscar [Marion] is the African-American cooking sweet potatoes in John Blake White's painting at the Capitol. Oscar likely "helped with the cooking and mending clothes, but he would also have fought alongside Marion"."
