Notes: The road depicted on the map is the Tokaido Road meaning East Coast Road. It was an important transportation route in Edo Japan connecting the old capital of Kyoto with the new eastern capital of Tokyo. The prominence of the road continued during the Meiji Period which included stringing the telegraph system to connect both capitals. The date on this map may have been produced during the reforms of the Meiji period.
