Historical Context: Mourning hand fan with images of Alberta Williams King and her son Martin Luther King, Jr. The fan was likely distributed by Burton's Funeral Home in Tuskeegee, Alabama. Alberta Williams King was an American civil rights organizer and the mother of Martin Luther King, Jr. She was the choir director at Ebenezer Baptist Church where Dr. King was co-pastor from 1960 to 1968 when he was assassinated. Alberta King was shot and killed on June 30, 1974 at Ebenezer Baptist Church while playing the organ by Marcus Wayne Chenault, a 23 year old African-American who believed all Christians were his enemies. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a prominent activist in the civil rights movement participating in marches for voting rights, desegregation and labor rights. In March, 1963 he delivered his most famous speech at the Washington mall called "I Have A Dream". On April 4, 1968 King was assassinated by James Earl Ray.

Historical Context: Denis Diderot was a major figure in the Age of Enlightenment and was a philosopher and writer. He is best known for the encyclopedie which was the first to introduce the mechanical arts. It became controversial because of skeptical views on religion and was banned by the Catholic Church and the French government. There were many contributors and the two most famous were his friend Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Voltaire.

Historical Context: World War I was a conflict touched off by the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife by a Serbian nationlist on June 28, 1914. Gavrilo Princip, the assassin was part of a nationalist movement to end Austro-Hungarian rule and wanted to increase Serbian power in the Balkans. Austria declared war on Serbia on July 28, 1914 with an alliance with Germany. Because of war alliances formed throughout Europe it became a global conflict. When Germany invaded Belgium in August, 1914, Great Britain declared war on Germany because it violated the Belgian sovereignity.

On June 28, 1914 Bosnian nationalist Gavrilo Princip assassinated the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife Sophie. It was the catalyst that started the war. Territorial disputes, arm races and Germany's ambitions to grow and empire to compete with France and Great Britain were part of the cause for the war.
