Brief Description: Volume five is a compilation of the American Museum, a monthly magazine published by Mathew Carey. This volume is from January, 1789 to June, 1789. Included are lists of subscribers in each state which include the names of Moses Greenleaf, Maine mapmaker; Aaron Burr, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington. Also included are two folded prints: a map of the Gulf Stream and the plan of an African slave ship showing the lower deck "with Negroes in the proportion of not quite one to a ton". The plan divides the ship's hold into "men's room", "boys' room", "women's room", "girl's room" and "store room". This volume includes poetry, prose, editorial letters, government reports and articles about agriculture to literature. Dedication: "To His Excellency Thomas Mifflin, Esq. president of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, this volume is with due respect, dedicated by this obedient, humble servant, Mathew Carey. Philadelphia, January 20, 1789".
