Historical Context: The collection of letters was published about a year after Nat Turner's rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia. The revolt turned violent starting in August, 1831. Rebels killed around 65 people before they were defeated by militia. Turner eluded capture for several weeks until he was captured by a farmer. In November, 1831 Turner was convicted and sentenced to death.
