Atlas comprises a title page, bird's eye view and two maps of the Black Hills printed lithographically. A number of towns, settlements and mining camps are shown along with the complex network of rivers and streams that comprised the Cheyenne watershed. After the discovery of gold in the Black Hills by miners accompanying Custer's 1874 expedition, the federal government expropriated the area from the Lakota Sioux in violation of the Treaty of Fort Laramie. In 1875 the government sent in a large scientific expedition headed by Walter P. Jenney. (Notes from dealer information).
