Brief Description: Portion of a map by W.C. Reynolds promoting the candidacy of John Fremont for President as the representative of the newly formed Republican Party formerly the Whig Party. The map was published in the wake of the passage of the 1854 Kansas-Nebraska Act, establishing two new territories and repealing the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which prohibited slavery in the Louisiana Purchase north of 36° 30ʹ. Featured on the map is the 1850 census comparing chief statistics of the free states and slave states; presidential and vice-presidential elections; slaveholders in 1850 and the number of slaves held, and text describing the unfairness of congressional representation. Pink color on free states contrasts with the dark green and gray of the slave states and territories.

Historical Context: John Fremont ran against James Buchanan in the 1856 campaign which was dominated by whether or not repeal the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 which allowed new states the option to permit slavery. Buchanan supported the Act and Fremont did not. The Act launched "Bloody Kansas" and would lead to the Civil War.
