Brief Description: Chromolithograph broadside that condemned the treatment of the Irish under British rule. Scenes depict victims of the 1847 famine with an informer for the British looking on holding a money bag. Included are scenes of land clearance resulting in evictions, beatings by police. The names Allen, Larkin, O'Brien in the center were three Fenian activiists who accidentally killed a police officer while trying to free their comrades and were executed. Also pictured is the figure of Columbia handing Erin representing Ireland a sword "for deliverance". The broadside was intended to be distributed throughout Europe to encourage Irish emigration to the United States symbolized by the intertwining of the American and Irish flags. The ship in the background along side "Van Diemens Land" was a convict transport to the penal colony.

Historical Context: The broadside depicts Ireland in the throes of political and social turmoil brought on by harsh British rule and a series of natural disasters including the Famine of the 1840's. It is also a way to persuade the Irish to come to the United States for a better life as illustrated with the figures of Columbia handing Erin representing Ireland a sword for deliverance from the problems of the country. In the end thousands of Irish left for America to try and better their lives.
