Brief Description: "This plan represents 3/4 of the town of Gouldsboro surveyed in 1798, land down by a scale of twenty chains to an inch." The 1798 date is a survey done for the Bingham Purchase of 1795 and surveyed in 1798 by Isaac Coolidge. The land was part of two large tracts totaling 2 million acres purchased by William Bingham, a wealthy Philadelphia banker. After the Revolutionary War, Massachusetts sold off large tracts of unsettled land in Maine by lottery. Bingham drew several townships and purchased others including 1 million acres from General Henry Knox whose duties as Secretary of War prevented him from developing the lands.
