Brief Description: Armory Square Hospital was constructed in 1862 and cared for over 13,000 sick and wounded soldiers until 1865. The plan depicts clean and well-ventilated pavilions labeled A through K that housed 1,000 beds. Situated across from the Smithsonian Institute grounds there were gardens consisting of nine different designs. Included are lists of "surgeons in charge" and "volunteer lady nurses". Also included are the locations of nurses residences, the laundry-kitchen, the dead house, chapel and chaplain. Vignettes in the plan are of those produced for currency such as the eagle, George Washington and Lady Liberty. The poet Walt Whitman spend three years as a nurse at the hospital and President Lincoln made frequent visits.
