Notes: From National Geographic Magazine Fourth of the series of five murals by N.C. Wyeth, the originals of which adorn the walls of the National Geographic Society buildings in Washington. The other four pictures have appeared as frontispieces in the National Geographic Magazine for March, May, July and November, 1928. While simulating the illuminated mariners' charts of the Sixteenth Century, which pictorially dramatized the deeds of dauntless explorers, this map of the Eastern Hemisphere records present-day political boundaries. It also traces the sailing routes of historic discoverers who encountered distant continents and expanded upon knowledge of the charted world. Shows routes of explorers. Includes mythological representations and ship illustrations. Copy 2 of 4. See also the catalog record for the Western Hemisphere : map of discovery.
