Brief Description: First edition of a 1749 prospectus advertising the production of two large globes to be constructed according to the latest up-to-date mathematical, geographical and astronomical information. Designed by the newly created Societé Cosmographique, the globes would have bee produced by the prestigious cartographic firm of the Homann Heirs, headed by Johann Michael Franz. The project was never completed having run into financial and time constraints Included in the prospectus are three engravings: a geometrical diagram relating to the shape of the gores of the globes; full size hand colored sample gore entitled "Specimen trigesimae sextae partis ex globo terrestri trium pedum Parisin" ("Specimen of the 36-part terrestrial globe with a diameter of three Parisian feet") engraved by Sebastian Dorn; third engraving is a calligraphic form for subscribers to complete and include a down payment for the globes which guaranteed delivery of the globes within 30 months. Also included are trigonometric equations which show how the globe gores would be shaped to fit the sphere The engraved gore shows the north American east coast from Newfoundland to Cape Hatteras, the Caribbean from Cuba to the Leeward Islands and the north coast of South America.
