Brief Description: The Panama Canal is an artificial 51 mile waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. It was a difficult engineering project of its day. It reduces the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It was begun by the French in 1881 under the direction of diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps. In 1904 to 1914 the United States took over the project. The canal construction was completed in 1914 and was the largest American engineering project of its kind. Included are watercolors by E.J. Read, photo images of Panama and the construction of the canal.
