Brief Description: John Howard was a philanthropist and early prison reformer. His personal experience as a prisoner of French privateers in 1755 may have generated his interests in prison conditions. The first edition of state of prisons published in 1777 and a second edition in 1780 included detailed accounts of the prisons he visited in England, Wales and parts of Europe noting lack of hygiene, cleanliness and the cruel treatment of some of the prisoners. Included are plans and drawings of Newgate, the Bastille in France and a prison in Bern.  Attached inside the book is a letter written on May 20, 1789 by Howard who sent "one of two remaining copies of my last edit on prisons" to possibly a friend or to T. Sewell who most likely published the book.
