Brief Description: The Free American was part of a merger with the Emancipator newspaper out of New York in 1835 and Boston, Massachusetts from 1841-1844. From 1844 to 1845 it became the Emancipator and Weekly Chronicle. From 1845 to 1848 it became Emancipator and Free Soil then merged with the Boston Weekly Republican to form the Emancipator and Republican. It was published by the Liberty Party from 1840 to 1850 and was the official newspaper of the American Anti-Slavery Society. Among the editors were Joshua Leavitt, an American Congregationalist minister, former lawyer, writer, editor and publisher of abolition literature. Elizur Wright of Boston was also an editor from Boston and known for advancements in life insurance and its regulation.

Historical Context: In 1828 New York State abolished slavery. Throughout the 1830's and 1840's several abolitionist newspapers such as William Lloyd Garrison's "The Liberator" and Frederick Douglass's "The North Star" became the catalysts to abolish slavery. The Free American, the Emancipator founded by the Liberty Party ran pro-abolitionist candidates between 1840 and 1844 which were featured in the newspaper.
