Historical Context: The Battle of Gettysburg occurred in the state of Pennsylvania from July 1 to July 3rd, 1863. It was a pivotal battle of the American Civil War with two large armies clashing in and around the town and the outskirts for three days. The battle involved the largest number of casualities of the entire war. This was Confederate General Robert E. Lee's second attempt to invade the North and bring the war to and end. The defeat dashed the hopes of the Confederate States of America to become an independent nation.
