Historical Context: Lynchings took place in the United States before and after the American Civil War most commonly in the Southern states and Western frontier settlements. Mob violence was used as a way to enforce white supremacy. Groups such as the Ku Klux Klan instigated many of the crimes against Black people in order to instill fear. Several bills introduced in Congress against lynching did not pass until the 1950's Civil Rights Movement and the lynching of 14 year old Emmett Till gained momentum. In 2018 the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama commemorated the victims of lynching. Finally on March 29, 2022 President Joe Biden signed the Emmett Till Antilynching Act of 2022 classifying lynching as a federal hate crime.
