Brief Description: Adaptation for elementary school children of Woodson's The Negro in our History. The aim was to educate children about the history of their own people using well-known figures such as Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, John Hale of Maine. Carter Goodwin Woodson was the son of former slaves. He was the second African-American to receive a doctorate from Harvard, the first being W.E.B. DuBois. His books were geared to younger children and endeavored to counter stereotypes of racial inferiority.
