Physical Description: Pen and ink map of America with inset of the Isthmus of Panama by P. Hein dedicated to his grandmother. Between 1850 and 1875, the French were actively undertaking surveys for the prospect of a canal across the Isthmus of Panama and the Isthmus of Darien. The maker may have been part of the French survey team in the region in the early 1870's.
