Brief Description: The Temperance Recorder and other periodicals promoting temperance were sponsored by wealthy businessman Edward Cornelius Delavan. Includes a promotional certificate of abstinence with printed facsimile signatures of presidents Madison, Jackson and John Quincy Adams. Includes a map depicting two continents separated by bodies of water illustrating the dangers of alcohol through the virtues of abstinence. The continent of Self-Denial embraces enjoyment, improvement and plenty while the continent of Ardent Spirits features the Sea of Anguish, Bad Wine Lake and Drunken Hallow. Numbered key depicts the inlets and islands "in the sea of temperance" and the "islands in the sea of temperance".
