Brief Description: The map records Warsaw's neighborhoods, parks, streets, railways but highlights in yellow the Warsaw Ghetto. In 1941 the Nazis rounded up over 400,000 Jewish citizens into an area of 1.3 square miles and more were added to the ghetto. In January, 1943 the ghetto's inhabitants decided to fight back as the Nazis were rounding up Jewish citizens and sending them to extermination camps such as Treblinks. From April 19th to May 16th, 1943 the ghetto inhabitants fought the Germans but were overwhelmed by Waffen-SS. Survivors were either executed or sent to an extermination camp.

Historical Context: On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland capturing Warsaw on October 1st, 1939. Many who resisted the invasion were either executed by the Nazi Einsatzgruppen execution squads or were sent to concentration camps as forced laborers. Although Warsaw was liberated by the Soviet Red Army in January, 1945, Poland came under Soviet rule until the fall of Communism in 1989.
