Brief Description: Five volumes of resolves of the General Court of Massachusetts between 1797 and 1801. Of interest is the resolve on the proposals of Osgood Carleton and John Norman to create maps for the Commonwealth. The court resolved that one map would contain the territory of the District of Maine (From Resolves of the General Court, XXIV, p. 17).

Historical Context: The one resolve of interest for maps was the proposal of Osgood Carleton and John Norman to create maps for the Commonwealth. Carleton was a cartographer, surveyor, mathematical and navigational teacher. John Norman was an engraver and publisher in Boston and printed the District of Maine map. In 1791 he published the American Pilot.
