Brief Description: The poster emphasizes the grim realities of war through the shirtless soldier carrying his wounded comrade amid the noise and smoke on the battlefield.  Henry Raleigh  illustrated the poster in 1917 for the United States Food Administration. Raleigh was an accomplished draftsman and illustrator and was the lithographer behind many of the World War I posters. The United States Food Administration  was established by an Act of Congress in 1917  to manage food distribution, production and conservation during wartime. Led by Herbert Hoover it also supplied Allied troops.

Historical Context: The United States entered the war in 1917 after Germany sank three United States merchant ships. Another incentive was the British interception of the Zimmerman telegram issued from the German Foreign Office on January 17, 1917 that proposed a military contract between the German Empire and Mexico.
