Historical Context: This is the first separate map of the northwestern part of North America, covering the essentially unexplored region from present-day California to Alaska. Of particular interest is the depiction of the magnetic pole as an arctic island (upper left margin), and of the legendary fabulously rich city of Quivira, the never-realized goal of many Spanish explorers. The fine hand coloring is typical of the early Dutch period, and the few cities are designated by conventional red symbols. The sea is embellished with detailed engravings of European and oriental ships, and sea monsters, including one with the head and neck of a unicorn. The unknown interior areas are occupied by text panels and vignettes of animals, including "cattle with camel humps," and of natives living in tents. An inscription notes similarity of the tents to those of the Tartars, possibly an early suggestion of migration from Asia to America.

Historical Context: De Jode's rare, seminal work is the first folio-sized atlas map to focus on North America. The map contains many remarkably early cartographic details, including a very linear representation of a double Northwest Passage running the length of the top of the map. The map is filled with annotations regarding early explorations in the New World, referencing Verazano, Cabot, Raleigh, and other explorers; an early mention of the Apaches is also present. Shown near the Northwest Passage is the early mythical great lake, Lac Conibas, which made an earlier appearance on Wytfliet's 1597 map. To the right of the title is a scene illustrating the attack on Frobisher's vessel by American Indians. Although his map was vastly superior to Ortelius' map of the Americas, De Jode's atlas sold poorly, accounting for the rarity of this work.

Historical Context: In this decorative map, Ortelius divides the Ancient World into five climatic zones. Although its place names are taken from the ancient times of Ptolemy, this map presents the landmasses in relatively contemporary configurations and illustrates the Portuguese discoveries in South and East Asia and Richard Hakluyt?s discoveries in the North. A richly ornate border incorporating four small insets, representations of Europe, Asia, Africa, and America, constituting the modern world, frames the map.

Historical Context: This beautifully engraved map appeared in an early Dutch book on navigation to the East and West Indies, and its imagery is a complex mixture of allegory and natural history. It is one of the first printed maps of the world to include allegorical vignettes around both hemispheres. The border decorations consist largely of personifications of the continents, set against landscapes depicting their respective terrains, fauna, flora, and scattered inhabitants. The geography of the map shows updated details based on recent English voyages and the description of Japan by Portuguese cartographer Luiz Teixeira. The map also turns Willem Barentsz's Novaya Zemlya into an island with an open sea representing the North-West Passage between it and the Arctic.
